Program details
The Master's Program is designed to provide a holistic understanding of tourism research, developing interdisciplinary and generic skills, while students gain a deeper knowledge in the key areas of: Tourism Management, Regional Revitalisation and Tourism & Culture. Specific emphasis is given to the following 3 features.
Feature1
Through foundation subjects, students gain a fundamental and holistic knowledge of ‘tourism studies’ and research methodologies.
Feature2: Specialised knowledge will be gained in three applied areas.
In Tourism Management, subjects are designed to analyse tourism from management perspectives. Tourism requires development of related industries such as service, transport and logistics. The current state and future directions of the management of these industries will be explored from both management and marketing points of view.
In Regional Revitalisation, the tourism phenomena is analysed with focus on local society and economy. Tourism does not just occur in ‘scenic places’ but exists in urban and rural areas and communities when their ‘attractiveness’ is understood. We will explore ways to revitalise local areas through this kind of tourism.
In the Tourism & Culture area, we will analyse tourism phenomena from a cultural studies point of view. Diverse culture is an essential element of tourism as intercultural situations increase with people’s mobility and developments in information technology and media. Here we will discuss tourism from perspectives of cultural formation and creation.
Feature3: Emphasis on social relevance and practicality
Social relevance and practical applications are a priority in subject designing. In foundation subjects, acquisition of generic skills applicable to all disciplines and practical applications is ensured through fieldwork and internship. Some subjects are offered in English to ensure the development of skills necessary in a globalising society.
